STORY

During excavations of the Yumuktepe mound, located in the northern part of the city, numerous artifacts where discovered. The oldest of them is dated 6300 BC, and the newest is coming from the Seljuk period. All the Artifacts discovered during excavations are recently exhibited in the archaeological museum of Mersin, Adana, Tarsus, Silifke and Anamur. And in Mersin, two Levantine cathedrals are still preserved, as well as Latin, Italian, Arabic and Orthodox churches. In addition, it is planned to build a church for the Greeks in the northern part of Mersin.

Mersin has 300 sunny days a year. Being a geographical logistics hub, Mersin is the warmest part of Turkey and Europe, with an average annual temperature of 22°C and its remained to be so for many years. The climate of Mersin is very mild and healing, as the sun shines here 300 days a year. The humidity in Mersin is lower than in other southern cities of Turkey along the Mediterranean coast. And Anamur bananas are famous all over the world.

ECONOMY

The Seaport has become the backbone of Mersin's economy. Turkey's second largest tax free economic zone, having 433 companies within, was established in Mersin.

Mersin's assets are also growing thanks to shopping centers, which are indispensable in everyday life. In 2009, Forum, Marinavista, Palmcity, Sayapark, Soli Center, MersinMarina, Tarsus and others were recognized as the best shopping centers in Europe. The number of shopping centers in Mersin is constantly growing. The Forum Mersin shopping Mall and entertainment center, was built by Multi Turkmall in 2009, was recognized as the best shopping center in Europe. This status was given by the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), which is Europe's largest retail organization.gowli.

EDUCATION

The city has 4 universities, 1,301 public and 71 private schools. Medical care in Mersin is at a high level and even people from Europe and America come here to improve their health. There are 9 public and 11 private hospitals in Mersin.

Turkey's first State Opera and Ballet Theater was opened in Mersin. Performances acted by opera and ballet artists are taking place in the cultural center of the city. In addition, the International Music Festival (Festival of International Mersin Music) is held annually in Mersin.

TOURISM

The importance of 321 km coastline alone the entire province of Mersin cannot be taken for granted. Natural beaches make up about 108 km of Mersin's coastline. Thanks to important historical monuments and attractions, this city has become increasingly famous in tourism in recent years. 

It is the most important center for domestic tourism in Turkey. Thanks to changes in tourism and new hotels built along the coast in recent years, Mersin is becoming Turkey's new tourist destination. In order to develop yacht tourism, the construction of Mersin's main harbor has been completed with the capacity to moor 500 yachts and disembark 300 yachts in accordance with international standards.

Alahan Monastery, the caves of heaven and hell, Kizkalesi, Ayash, Yumuktepe, Soli Pompyopolis, Eshab-i Kekhf, the ruins of the ancient city of Anemurium and Cleopatra's Gate in Mersin always attract the attention of tourists.

Frequently visited areas among local tourists are Tisan, Tasucu, Narlikuyu and Dana Island.

After Pope Benedict XVI declared 2008 the “Year of St. Paul,” Christian tourists began to visit the Tarsus area more often. In 2008, the Alahan Monastery in the Mut region and the well and memorial museum of St. Paul in the Tarsus region were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
